Yep, I gotcha β€” 2 summer job search hacks for busy parents πŸ”₯

Hi, my friend!

So it's been a whirlwind of sweat, sunscreen, and scabs already this summer for us, but I didn't want to forget...!

I'm copying and pasting a recent LinkedIn post below just for you, in case you missed it, Reader :)

These tips will help keep momentum going!

2 things to do this summer if Plan A includes back-burnering the job search 🫠

I get it β€” Full-time parenting/caregiving during summer weeks can be *so fun* [πŸ˜‘]…

… And can also get hot, sticky, cranky, and messy.

The days are long πŸ˜…

If your summer progression looks anything like mine (below, in emojis, on repeat), then

summertime shenanigans this year might mean deprioritizing your workforce re-entry job search, whether on purpose or whether it’s just the way the cookie crumbles.

πŸ€©πŸ˜ƒπŸ« πŸ˜‘πŸ˜©πŸ˜πŸ™ƒ

Understandable.

HOWEVER, the work-for-pay world lives on, and all of those potential industry connections, informal chats, intriguing company conversations are ripe & at arms reach πŸ™ŒπŸΌβœ¨

Take advantage!

1️⃣ Talk to people.

Reach out. Connect. Ask questions. Ask for introductions. Learn about an unfamiliar role, industry, career path, or company.

- get to know a day in the life
- learn top skills needed for the role
- become more familiar with an industry
- discover company goals, challenges, culture
- find out details to someone’s fascinating career path

β€œBut how??” You ask…

2️⃣ Upskill.

Take an online course (or two). Short ones. Long ones. Paid ones. Free ones. Beginner ones. Advanced ones.

Whether a skill you need to sharpen or dipping a toe in to get a taste, you won’t regret an online course.
πŸ‘‰πŸΌ LinkedIn Learning, Coursera, Udemey, Google Career Certificates

- broaden an area of expertise
- bolster industry knowledge
- get a required credential
- increase confidence
- brush up on a skill
- satisfy intrigue

Doing one or both of these options will set your back burner to simmer so you’re ready to roll come fall πŸ™ŒπŸΌπŸ€—

Here's some excellent actionable baby steps from a few of my fellow career coaches:

βœ… Reach out to one person a week β€” that’s 8 peeps for July + August

βœ… Start by connecting with previous [trusted] colleagues or college/university classmates for a low-stress, low-risk activation of your dormant network

βœ… Remember to set aside an outfit for interviews / Zoom meets (if anything comes up, you'll want to feel ready rather than caught off guard)

These things will give your summer β€œnetworking” a high-success rate β€” aka

  • people agreeing to chat
  • getting leads for open roles
  • learning about interesting opportunities
  • asking for introductions
  • building a list of references
  • boosting overall confidence πŸ™ŒπŸΌπŸ€—

πŸ’‘ Reminder: β€œSuccess is often about momentum.”

Keep your job search on a simmer this summer… don’t stop!

Here with you every step of the way,

rebecca joy
